A Place of Their Own

A new, short documentary, “A Place of Their Own“, depicts the current state of homelessness particularly in Ocean County, New Jersey, while exploring the innovative options to address this growing problem. Ocean County currently has no shelters within its borders.

The film provides vital education on some of the issues that are causing a rise in homelessness in the state, as well as programs such as Micro-housing and One Stop Model shelters, which serve to alleviate some of the problems.

Contribution

  • Directed and edited the film, including interviews, b-roll and graphic animation creation.
  • Organized production days as well as shot BTS photography.
  • Produced the narrative story arc from research and footage recorded.
  • Created and implemented a social awareness campaign around the film, outlines strategies and goals.
  • Created a fully funded KIckstarter campaign to cover additional production expenses like Colorist, Audio Mixing Engineer as well as print materials and festival submissions fees.
  • Successfully applied to and was screened at film festivals in NY, NJ and DC.
  • Hosted screenings in college and university schools of Humanities and Social Science.
  • Write content and organize graphic designers for promotional materials, like brochures, DVD cases.

 

Won the Harriet Tubman Award at the Freedom Film Festival.

From 2015 to 2016, the 29-minute film was screened in at festivals in NY, NJ and Washington DC, including the Garden State Film Festival, and the Hoboken International Film Festival.

The film is currently available for screening for educational and awareness purposes

 

Cast

The film includes interviews with former residents of Tent City, the now closed homeless encampment in Lakewood, as well as key advocate of the homeless, including Minister Steve Brigham.

The film also showcases, Julie Orlando, director of Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services, who attended a White House function in July honoring agencies who are running successful programs to reduce incidents of homelessness.

Outreach

  • Organized screenings at universities like Monmouth University and Montclair State University.
  • Organized Varick Memorial AME Zion Church’s ‘Cardboard City Homeless Experience’ .

Local families and youth groups will built their home out of cardboard boxes to prepare for a night when the average temperature is near freezing (34 degrees).

NJ Church Challenges Residents to Sleep on the Street for One Night

“The goal of this film has always been to bring about discussion on the various causes of homelessness and get people talking about solutions, thinking outside the box and looking at new ways in which to assist those in need,” said Candida Wiltshire, executive producer of the film, as well as counselor and homeless advocate.
